Stair Railings Lower Mainland

A staircase without the right railing is a problem waiting to happen. Not just aesthetically, though a dated or mismatched railing does drag down everything around it. The bigger issue is safety. In BC, residential stair railings are governed by building code for a reason. The wrong height, the wrong spacing, the wrong anchoring method, and you have a railing that looks fine until the moment it actually needs to hold something.

Most homeowners only find out their railings for staircases are not up to code when they go to sell the home and an inspector flags it, or worse, when someone actually grabs the railing and it gives. A staircase sees daily use from every person in the home, including kids and elderly family members. It is not the place to cut corners on installation quality or skip the code requirements.

At TJ Railing, we install stair railings that are built right from the start. Indoor stair railings for residential staircases, exterior stair railings for outdoor steps and landings, and custom staircase design that fits the space, the style, and BC building code. Every project is measured, designed, and installed by a crew that has done this across the Lower Mainland since 2020.

We are part of the railings team at TJ Railing. For our full range of railing systems including glass options, visit our railings page, or see our glass railing page if you are considering a glass system for your staircase.

SERVICE OVERVIEW

Stair Railing Applications

Indoor Stair Railings

Interior staircases are where staircase design has the most visible impact on a home. The railing is one of the first things you see when you walk into an open-plan home, and it sets the tone for the quality of the whole space.

We install indoor stair railings in a range of materials and styles. For homeowners who want a clean, modern look, glass railing on a staircase opens up the space, lets light pass through, and removes the visual weight of a traditional banister. For homeowners who want a more classic or transitional look, aluminum picket systems with a matching handrail deliver clean lines without the cost of a full glass installation.

Every indoor stair railing project is templated on site. Curved staircases, switchbacks, open risers, and non-standard tread depths all require custom panel and rail cuts. We measure before we order, and we do not adjust on install day.

Exterior Stair Railings

Outdoor staircases face a different set of demands. Exterior stair railings need to handle BC's rain, UV exposure, temperature swings, and in some areas snow load, without rusting, rotting, or losing structural integrity.

We install exterior stair railings using materials rated for outdoor use in BC's climate. For glass systems, that means UV-treated tempered glass and marine-grade stainless steel hardware. For aluminum systems, that means powder-coated structural aluminum that does not rust or corrode.

Exterior staircase anchoring also requires attention to the substrate. Concrete, treated wood, and steel framing each require a different anchoring approach, and the post base needs to be sealed properly to prevent water ingress at the connection point.

Staircase Design

Beyond the technical requirements, staircase design is about how the railing fits the overall look of the home. We work with homeowners to choose the right system for the space, whether that is a frameless glass panel system that disappears into the room, an aluminum picket system that matches the exterior trim, or a combined glass railing and aluminum system that balances transparency with budget.

We bring samples and walk you through the options during the consultation. The goal is a stair railing that looks like it was always part of the home, not like it was added after the fact.

Why Stair Railing Installation Matters

A staircase is one of the highest-traffic areas in any home. It is also one of the most regulated, because the consequences of a failure are serious. BC building code sets specific requirements for stair railings that cover height, load capacity, graspability, and baluster spacing, and for good reason.

Height requirements. BC building code requires stair railings to be between 865mm and 1070mm measured vertically from the stair nosing. This range ensures the railing is at the right height for both adults and children to use effectively.

  • Load requirements. Residential railings for staircases must withstand a minimum horizontal load of 0.75 kN/m. This means the posts, anchoring, and rail system need to be properly engineered, not just aesthetically installed.
  • Baluster spacing. BC building code requires that no opening in a stair railing be large enough to allow a 100mm sphere to pass through. This prevents young children from getting their heads or bodies trapped between balusters.
  • Graspability. The handrail on a staircase must be graspable, meaning it needs to have a profile that a hand can wrap around. This rules out flat top rails and oversized profiles for handrail applications.

Every stair railing we install meets these requirements. We handle the code side so you do not have to.

FAQs

FAQ

The cost of stair railings depends on the material, linear footage, and whether it is an indoor or exterior installation. Aluminum staircase systems typically range between $100 and $200 per linear foot installed. Glass staircase systems range between $150 and $300 per linear foot installed. Curved or non-standard staircases cost more due to custom templating and fabrication. Contact us for a free on-site quote.

BC building code requires stair railings to be between 865mm and 1070mm measured vertically from the stair nosing. This applies to both indoor stair railings and exterior stair railings. All our installations are measured and confirmed to this standard.

Replacing an existing stair railing with a new system of the same height generally does not require a permit in most BC municipalities. If you are adding a railing to an existing staircase that did not previously have one, or if you are changing the height, a permit may be required. We are familiar with the requirements across the Lower Mainland and can advise you based on your project.

BC building code requires that no opening in a stair railing be large enough to allow a 100mm sphere to pass through. This applies to both the baluster spacing and the space between the bottom rail and the stair nosing. All our installations are designed and installed to meet this requirement.

Yes. Curved staircase installations are more complex and require precise on-site templating before any material is cut or ordered. We handle curved indoor stair railings on a project-by-project basis. Contact us to discuss your specific staircase geometry.

For exterior stair railings in BC’s climate, the two best options are powder-coated aluminum and tempered glass with marine-grade stainless steel hardware. Both resist moisture, UV exposure, and temperature swings without rusting or corroding. Aluminum is more affordable and requires almost no maintenance. Glass is more expensive but preserves sightlines and delivers a higher-end finish.

Most residential stair railing projects take one to two days depending on the length of the staircase and the complexity of the installation. Curved staircases or multi-level installations may take longer. We give you a clear timeline before the project starts.
