Swing Gates Services in Lower Mainland

A manual gate that nobody closes is not a gate. It is just hardware on a post. Most homeowners who install a manual swing gate start with the best intentions, closing it every time they come and go. Within a few weeks, the friction wins. The gate stays open because getting out of the vehicle twice every time you use the driveway is one inconvenience too many, and the security and privacy the gate was supposed to provide disappears with it.

The problem is not the gate. The problem is that a manual swing gate puts the entire burden of operation on the person using it. Rain, cold, running late, hands full of groceries. Every one of those situations becomes a reason to leave the gate open. And once the habit of leaving it open is established, the gate becomes an obstacle rather than a feature.

An automatic swing gate removes that friction entirely. You pull up, the gate opens. You drive through, the gate closes behind you. No getting out of the vehicle, no remembering to close it, no exceptions. At TJ Railing, we install automatic swing gates, dual swing gate openers, and heavy duty swing gate systems for residential and commercial properties across the Lower Mainland. If you are also considering a sliding configuration for your driveway gates, visit our Driveway Gates page to compare your options.

SERVICE OVERVIEW

Automatic Swing Gate Systems

Automatic Swing Gate Opener

An automatic swing gate opener is the motor and control system that drives the gate open and closed without manual effort. The opener is mounted on or near the hinge post and connects to the gate leaf via an arm or linear actuator. When triggered by a remote, keypad, or sensor, the motor drives the gate through its full range of motion and holds it in the open or closed position.

We install automatic swing gate openers rated for the specific weight and width of the gate. A light aluminum single-leaf gate and a heavy duty swing gate in steel require very different opener specifications. Using an undersized opener on a heavy gate is one of the most common causes of premature automation failure, and it is something we design around from the start.

Dual Swing Gate Opener

A dual swing gate opener controls two gate leaves simultaneously from a single control panel. Both leaves open and close in a coordinated sequence, with the opening sequence typically staggered so the leaves do not collide at the center.

The dual swing gate opener system includes two motors, one per leaf, synchronized through the control panel. Access triggers (remote, keypad, intercom, or smartphone) send a signal to the control panel, which then sequences the motor operation for both leaves. We program the open and close timing for each installation based on the gate width and driveway layout.

Heavy Duty Swing Gate Opener

For larger gates, steel construction, or high-cycle applications, a heavy duty swing gate opener is required. Standard residential openers are rated for gates up to a certain weight and width. Beyond those limits, the motor, arm, and mounting hardware need to be upgraded to match the load.

We use heavy duty swing gate openers rated for gates up to 500kg per leaf on commercial and large residential installations. These systems use industrial-grade motors, reinforced mounting brackets, and control panels designed for higher cycle counts than standard residential hardware.

Safety Swing Gate

A safety swing gate incorporates safety features that prevent the gate from closing on a vehicle, person, or obstacle. The most common safety features include:

  • Obstruction detection: The gate motor reverses or stops when it senses resistance during closing, preventing damage to vehicles or injury to people in the gate's path.
  • Safety edges: Pressure-sensitive strips on the leading edge of the gate that trigger a stop and reverse when they contact an obstacle.
  • Photo beams: Infrared sensors positioned across the gate opening that hold the gate open when the beam is broken by a vehicle or person.
  • Slow close: The gate decelerates as it approaches the closed position, reducing impact force if the closing path is not fully clear.

All the automatic swing gate systems we install include at minimum obstruction detection as standard. Additional safety features are available and recommended for high-traffic residential and all commercial installations.

What Is a Swing Gate?

A swing gate is a gate that opens and closes on hinges, like a door. It can swing inward, toward the property, or outward, toward the street, depending on the driveway layout and local requirements. Most residential swing gates in the Lower Mainland swing inward to avoid encroaching on the public road or sidewalk.

Swing gates come in single-leaf and double-leaf configurations. A single swing gate covers the full entrance width with one panel hinged on one side. A dual swing gate uses two panels hinged on opposite sides of the entrance that meet in the middle when closed. Dual swing gates are the standard choice for wider residential driveways, typically anything over 3 meters, where a single panel would be too heavy and too wide to operate smoothly.

The key requirement for a swing gate is clearance behind the gate equal to the gate width. If you have a driveway with limited depth or an uphill grade immediately behind the gate, a swing configuration may not work and a sliding gate would be a better fit. We assess this during the consultation.

Access Options for Automatic Swing Gates

  • Remote control: Standard wireless remote that opens and closes the swing gate from inside the vehicle.
  • Keypad entry: Coded keypad mounted at the gate for guest access without a remote.
  • Intercom system: Audio or video intercom that lets you identify and speak to visitors before opening the gate.
  • Smartphone integration: Smart gate openers that connect to your phone for remote access and monitoring from anywhere.
  • Loop detector: In-ground sensor that detects a vehicle approaching from inside the property and automatically opens the gate for exit.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Question

Manual swing gates for a standard residential entrance typically start around $2,500 to $4,500 installed. Automated automatic swing gates with opener, safety features, and access hardware range from $4,500 to $10,000 or more depending on gate size, weight, and access configuration. Heavy duty swing gate systems for larger or commercial applications cost more due to upgraded motor and mounting hardware. Contact us for a free on-site quote.

A swing gate opens on hinges like a door and requires clearance behind the gate equal to the gate width. A sliding gate rolls sideways on a track and requires clearance to one side of the opening. Swing gates are the standard choice for residential driveways with adequate depth. Sliding gates are better for driveways with limited depth, uphill grades, or where a swing arc would be impractical.

A swing gate requires clearance behind the gate equal to or greater than the gate width. For a 3-meter gate, you need at least 3 meters of flat, clear driveway behind the gate position for the panels to open fully without obstruction. We measure this during the consultation and advise on whether a swing or sliding configuration is the right fit.

A dual swing gate opener is an automation system that controls two gate leaves simultaneously. It includes two motors synchronized through a single control panel, with both leaves opening and closing in a coordinated sequence. A dual system is the standard automation choice for double-leaf swing gates on wider residential driveways.
